Alnus Rubra
Other common names: Red Alder, Western Alder, Oregon Alder
Note: Although Alder is mostly used for painted guitars, we have found a use for it as Core stock on some of our laminated models. Alder is lighter than Mahogany and Cherry, yet has a similar attractive color. *We are currently using Western Maple in place of Alder as we have found the properties very similar and have plenty of stock.*

Note: Northern White Ash (Hard Ash) is too heavy & dense to produce guitar grade tone wood.

Other common names: African White Mahogany, Blonde Mahogany (USA), Apaya (Nigeria), ESU (Congo), Lusamba (Zaire)
Note: The common name (or Trade Name) varies from country to country with many Exotic Woods as so does the Language.
Guibourtia Demeuseialso G. Pellegriniana & G. Tessmannii
Other common names: African Rosewood, Kevazingo, Essingang
Note: Bubinga ranges in color from ‘Light Pinkish’ Red Brown to ‘Deep Vivid’ Reddish Brown. Bubinga is occasionally figured.
Note: Ovankol/Shedua has replaced Bubinga for Neck Feature Strips on our Necks. These two woods are very similar with exception to mainly the color.
Prunus Serotina
Other common names: Black Cherry, American Cherry
Note: We recently introduced Western Maple (AA Quilted) as a substitute for Cherry. The properties, appearance and tone are very similar to Cherry but lightly figured.
Juglans Hindsii
Other common names: Flamed Walnut, Figured Walnut, California Walnut, California Black Walnut, Oregon Walnut, Oregon Black Walnut, West Coast Walnut.
Note: West Coast Walnut includes a smorgasbord of species & crossbreeds sometimes difficult to classify. Claro (from the Spanish word ‘Clear’) is the common name for this group of Walnuts.
Dalbergia Retusa
Other common names: Granadillo (Mexico)
Note: This Dense Rosewood (Dalbergia) is heavier than Ebony. Colors range from yellow brown to orange brown, to reddish brown with colored streaks running through the grain.
Juglans Nigra
Other common names: Figured Black Walnut, Feathered Crotch Walnut, Curly Walnut, Figured Walnut
Note: Figured Walnut is one of the most beautiful woods in the world. Crotch Walnut is mainly used on Black Tiger Models. See also “Claro Walnut”.
Diospyros Celebicasyn. Diospyros Macassar
Other common names: Striped Ebony, Indian Ebony
Note: Various Ebonies come from Africa, India & Indonesia. We have found the best results with this particular species. Due to it’s elasticity it is less prone to cracking than other Ebony species in the wider widths needed for Book matched Tops and 5, 6, & 7 String Fingerboards.
Phoebe Porosa
Other common names: *Brazilian Walnut, Imbuya, Canela Imbuia, Amerela
Note: *Not a true Walnut, but it’s similarity in color carried this trade name in years past.
Acacia Koa
Other common names: Hawaiian Koa, Acacia
Note: Due to excessive usage this wood has become very scarce, which has driven the price ‘sky-high’ in recent years.
Carvalho Brasileiroalso Roupala Brasilensis
Other common names: London Plane, European Plane (UK), Australian Silky Oak, Australia Lacewood (Australia), Leopard Wood, Amazon Leopard Wood (Brazil)
Note: Many varieties of Lacewood are used from Australia, Europe & South America. They are all different Species with a similar pattern, but not directly related . Most Lacewoods now come from Brazil.
Swietenia Macrophylla*also Khaya Ivorensis, African Mahogany
Other common names: Honduras Mahogany, Caoba, South American Mahogany, Brazilian, Nicaraguan, Peruvian, etc.-named by country of origin. Also, African Mahogany (Khaya Species).
Note: Mahogany from Tropical America is sill called Honduran Mahogany in the trade, but is no longer imported from Honduras.
Acer Saccharum
Other common names: Hard Maple, Rock Maple, White Maple, Sugar Maple
Note: We have found this species to be the best overall material for Neck Wood. On occasion figured pieces are used for Body materials.
Machaerium Villosumalso M. Scleroxylon & M. Acutifolium
Other common names: Pau Ferro, Bolivian Rosewood, Iron Wood, Jacaranda Pardo, Caviuna, Santos Rosewood
Note: Morado & Pau Ferro are trade names for the same wood. Iron Wood in Latin translates to ‘Pau Ferro’. Morado is not a true Rosewood. Rosewoods are in the ‘Dalbergia’ Family.
Note: Due to the short supply of this wood, we are no longer offering Morado for the Top and Back. Our Morado is now limited to Bolt-on Neck Features and Fingerboards only!
Peltogyne Spp.
Other common names: Amaranth, Violetwood, Morado ( Venezuela)
Note: Although used mainly as veneers and body features, we have also used it as top and back sets and Neck Laminates in the past. Having similar properties to Morado (Pau Ferro) and Bubinga diminishes the need to use Purpleheart except for special requests.

Other common names: Shedua, Ovankol, Amazakoue’, Amazoue, Ehie, Mozambique
Note: Ovankol/Shedua ranges in color from Light Yellowish Brown to Dark Greyish Brown. Ovankol/Shedua are brother & sister to Bubinga (G. Demeusei).
Note: Bubinga Neck Strips have been replaced by Ovankol/Shedua. Flamed Ovankol/Shedua Top woods are also in stock as well in place of figured Bubinga. These two woods are brother & sister.

Note: Although not classified as a figured wood, this highly attractive wood is a favorite for Neck-thru buyers.
Other common names: Quilted Maple, Big Leaf Maple, and Western Curly Maple
Note: Western Maple is lighter than Cherry, similar to Alder and has a similar attractive color. The tone and texture is between the two. A perfect environmental substitute.
